Network Connection: Limited or No Connectivity

No Network Connection....Now What?

If you have suddenly lost your Internet connection after removing spy-ware or after a Windows update, the following steps will help restore your connection. This works for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP.

First confirm you are unable to receive an ip address....Here's how:

Checking an IP address on Windows 2000/XP

  • From the Start menu, choose Run.
  • Type cmd and click OK.
  • Type ipconfig and press Enter.
  • Check whether the IP address reads 24.244.xxx.xxx. if you are connected directly to the cable modem or 192.168.xxx.xxx if you connect through a router. If you have 0.0.0.0 for an IP address, type ipconfig /renew and verify that you receive one of the preceeding IP addresses. If you are receiving one of the ip addresses above an still cannot get on the Internet or Receive e-mails, your computer may be infected with any one of the following entities located on this page.

Checking an IP address on Windows 98

  • From the Start menu, choose Run.
  • Type winipcfg and click OK.
  • Check whether the IP address reads 149.130.xxx.xxx. If so, it is a valid Wellesley IP address.

Releasing and renewing an IP address on Windows 2000/XP

  • From the Start menu, choose Run.
  • Type cmd and click OK.
  • Type ipconfig /release and press Enter. Observe the space between "ipconfig" and "/release."
  • The IP address should now be 0.0.0.0.
  • Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter. The IP address should now read 24.244.xxx.xxx. If it does not, take note of the incorrect IP address or error message in the log.

Releasing and renewing an IP address on Windows 98

  • From the Start menu, choose Run.
  • Type winipcfg and click OK.
  • Click Release. Observe that the IP address is set to 0.0.0.0.
  • Click Renew. The IP address should now read 24.244.xxx.xxx. If you are connected directly to the cable modem or 192.168.xxx.xxx. If it does not, take note of the incorrect IP address in the log.

For Windows 98/ME users,

  • Download WinsockFix.zip.
  • (Pay close attention to where the file is saved to.)
  • Run WinsockFix.exe.
  • Click the Info button and follow the procedure for fixing/restoring the Winsock files. Please back up your registry in case the worst happens... better safe than sorry.

For Windows NT/2000/XP

  • Download WinsockFix.zip.
  • (Pay close attention to where the file is saved to.)
  • Run WinsockFix.exe.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database. After the program is complete, reboot and your problems should be resolved.
